Best In The Desert’s Biltek Silver State 300 will be held this Saturday, April 30th. The start and finish lines are close to Alamo, Nevada, a tiny town on Hwy 93 about 95 miles north of Las Vegas. With terrain varying from mountains, canyons and stream crossings to wide open desert sections this will prove to be a fast, yet challenging race. The Aliante Casino & Resort in Las Vegas is host for this race including tech inspection and contingency to be held on Friday April 29th.

The race includes six pit locations in some of the most beautiful desert and mountains Nevada has to offer. While scenic, the weather in the past has brought snow at this time of the year and with a major storm predicted for the area the day before the race, mother-nature may have her say on race day too.

Shaffer-Motorsports is competing in the Torchmate class 10 car for the entire BITD 2011 series. “Just finishing the Silver State 300 will put us in 5th place for the series championship but we are still aiming for the podium” notes Daniel Aeberli of Shaffer-Motorsports. Co-driver Shawn Twitchell adds, “We are using this race as a preparedness test for our pit crews. Our chase teams are among the best out there and they are critical to our success at all races including the big ones like BITD’s Vegas to Reno and SCORE’s Baja 1000″.

If you can’t be there, follow us on racetheworld.net, look for car 1066.

Shaffer-Motorsports would like to thank its sponsors: Torchmate CNC Systems, BFGoodrich, FOX Racing Shox, Shaffers Offroad, Ruffstuff and PSC. If you need race proven products of the highest quality contact these fine companies.

The 2010 Mint400 Torchmate/SOR Jeepspeed Race, from the Passenger’s seat.

After having the fire alarm go off in the hotel from 11:30 until just past midnight, the night before the race, We were all a little tired and irritated about the disruption in what was all planned out to be a good night’s sleep before the race. The 4:30am alarm came as a hit, like the what felt to be 2 million cross grain G-Outs we’d experience in the race.

Lance Clifford and I were going to race the first 2 lap’s, handing the car over to Owner, and Driver of Record Mike Shaffer. As we staged we learned then, it was side by side starts. We were lined up next to Chris Nissley, who for some reason stayed about 10ft back from the starting line, and as the starter began the 5, 4, 3, 2 count down, I heard Nissley’s motor almost bouncing off the rev limiter, as Lance began to power brake our 4wd Jeep.

And we’re off! We pulled the 1719 to the first corner on a course I can only describe as a cookie dough like silt, it was powdery, but didn’t make alot of dust, and it was thick, which kept us from accelerating like we wanted. The infield jumps were interesting, we learned quickly they had no backsides to them! Ooops!

We headed out across the desert quickly passing 2 Jeepspeed’s and what seemed like 20 other class car’s all stopped, either fixing flat’s already, or just broken. We fell into a line of Cars, the 1736, then a 1450 truck, the 1708, 1730, then us. 1736 wouldn’t yield the 1450, and no one was yielding us as we were all a car length apart like a train through the rock garden, which we’d later come to learn was the SMOOTH part of the course! after the 1736 got a flat, we were able to pick the pace up, still all in a line, but gained 10mph! Thanks Coan!

Once we got to the first pit area, and the course opened up, We fully got it out of shape, and on the ragged edge of control to pass both the 1730 and 1708, almost in one shot. We had clean air, and had just gotten confirmation we were in the lead on adjusted time. We were reeling in the 1706 at a good pace, watching their line choice, and looking for faster lines and we’d closed to about 10 car lengths

Just about RM43 the GPS shut off so we were flying blind, and the engine was starting to blubber at high RPM’s. We’d lost the alternator! We pulled into a pit site, at pit 2, and began tearing into the alternator, when our chase truck arrive to help us out. The crew we pitted with brought us a battery charger hooked to a generator, so we were charging our batteries as we replaced the alternator. We also had realized what the banging noise in the front end we’d dismissed as an older race car letting us know we weren’t being nice to it.

Our right front bump stop had worked it’s way loose of it’s mounting can, and slid most of the way out of the tube binding between the coil spring and the bump stop pad. We were able to get the damaged bump back in place, and tightened in.

And we were off, now in Lapped Trophy Truck and Class 1 traffic, so I spent 75% of my time looking in the mirror praying we didn’t get punted as we pounded our way through the cross grain for the next 40 miles. Our wounded right front bump stop had stuck, fully compressed and was now a metal to metal bump, causing us to slow our pace for fear of damage to our front axle. At Rm81 we hit yet another large cross grain G out, and Lance said the steering was gone. My first thought was, ok, no big deal, just a track bar heim. i’ve got 4 of them and all the right tools in my door bag.

What we saw when we got out was quite a sight! the upper track bar bolt had broke off, almost flush with the forward half of the bracket. And the rear half of the bracket had peeled open, and was 3-4in to the left of where it needed to be! We hammered on the bracket to try and bend it back into place, but it wasn’t happening. We eventually put the spare track bar in, because it had a good solid busing, and a new bolt, and tightened it down in a single shear configuration to get us moving, and to limp ourself to RM85 to meet our chase crews.

Once Mike saw the damage, and knew in that pit, we wouldn’t find the needed welder’s and torch’s to make the needed repair.

Overall, this has to be the single roughest race course I’ve ever been on. I’ve Raced Parker, V2R, Primm, Baja, Lucerne, Barstow, KOH, all many times each, and nothing compared to the violence of the Mint 400 course!

A big thanks to Lance for letting me ride along, sharing in the pain and misery that was the Mint400. And to Mike for letting us start the race, and selflessly just say, hey, that’s racing! when we had to call the race due to the failure.

And to the companies that support us so we can have these misadventures

A little back story to the train wreck leading up to the race. With striking an agreement to have BJ Baldwin race the 4471 in the 2010 KOH, i knew my time to do major rework to the car to both make it more comfortable for someone over 5′10, but to also help improve it’s offroad performance time was limited. So i used the time between Offroad Expo and Henderson to do that, because BJ would be very busy with preparing for the Baja 1000.

With seeing the level of work Shaffer’s Offroad did to Jason Scherer’s car, and how well it performed afterwards, the decision was obvious who I wanted to oversee the work!

With being as far along as we possibly could be a week before the race, waiting on some very specific key part’s to arrive via the brown truck, we were becoming pressed for time to be ready. Talks of withdrawing from the race came up, but knowing what the bigger picture was, if we could just start the race, we pushed forward.

Coming down to the wire, I made severall calls to people I knew Friday morning, and was put in contact with the right people at BITD to get setup to do a late registration and tech. Saturday morning at 6am!

We left Reno Friday night at 745pm, with only driving the car to the end of the parking lot and back to load it up, headed south. Pook and Myself had been up for over 40 hours without sleep at this point, along with Tim & Phil. Levi was our savior, since he had spent thursday night at home with his family, asleep, he was able to tow the racer safely to Jean. We checked into our room’s at 3am, knowing we had to be up at 5am.

Our crew, Pook & Myself already in our firesuits, driving Chase1, towing the 4471 turn onto Knight Ranch Road at 5:55am, after just tlking with Kirk @ BITD being told to HURRY UP! BLM stop’s us and asked for our pit pass….. Ummm BITD has it at the start line, we’re registering late. No Pit Pass, no access. Ummm, ok? my pit pass is a mile up the road, 2 people in fire suits, a truck full of chase gear, and a race car in tow, isn’t that a bit obvious we’re actually here for the race? I showed him the packet BITD had mailed me, proving it was me. Not good enough! after a 40 minute delay, watching 40+ cars just drive by, a BLM higher up gave us a pretty impressive ass chewing bout thing’s that weren’t any of my buisness, then allowed us to pass

We pull up to the start line to unload and get checked in. The first car’s are leaving the line while i’m signing insurance waiver’s. the crew is prepping the car for the start, but it won’t start! WTF!!! battery’s dead? WTF??? a quick jump start and we’re in buisness, of course we’re directed to the back of the pack, behind the rhino’s. No big deal. we’re the only car in our class who care’s how fast we go?

As we get in line, we realize the intercom isn’t working? WTF??? then we get rushed to the middle of the Rhino pack? Either way, we were off. the new 5.13 gear’s added a level of acceleration i hadn’t felt in the car before as it ripped off the line sideway’s all 4 tire’s blazing… about the time I grab 2nd gear I see Pook’s arms waiving like he’s having an epileptic seizure, I look ahead and realize there’s a 90+ degree corner lined with cones, a quick stab of teh brakes to scrub some speed, forgetting we had just installed the new TubeWorks brakes I almost send Pook out the windsheild as the car locks all 4 wheels up, WOW! we look like some assclowns!!!

We finish the small start line infield as i get a better respect for the new power, and stopping power i’ve got, and start down the whooped out gravel roads, just following the rhino’s in the dust, remebering, the car wasn’t driven 1000ft before being loaded into the trailer and send off the starting line!

With no communication, Pook was making hand gestures on corner’s and what he could see through the stagnant dust. Just cruising along. We got to mile 4 or so, and hit the pavment, I shifted back to 2wd and stood on it the car raced up to the back of a Rhino who would NOT move over to let us pass, so at 64mph we cruised while he went from shoulder to shoulder like a drunk person.

On teh high speed pavment the car felt like it was pulling right a bit, Meh, we never did check the toe after having the front end fully stripped down. A few miles later the reality set in that i did nick the side wall at about RM2 trying to go wide for clean air. It was going down slowly, so we pushed on trying to make sure we didn’t hit anything with that tire. That lasted until RM 19 or so. one of those unavoidable VW sized boulders in the middle of the tire rut through the boulder field….

So with the right front churning and kicking rocks up, we slowed down a bit, but hit almost 50mph on the totally shredded, now inverted casing on teh right front. when Pook start’s waving and pointing at the trans temp gauge, 250+ degrees? WTF? it’s below freezing out! So we pull over to the side of the course, well when i come to a stop I notice the motor is stalling about 3k rpm and won’t come down WTF? so i figure, it’s been running an hour, teh battery must be charged…. the cooler plug wasn’t making a good internal connection so we just cut and twisted teh wires together to get us going again. but guess what?? the Battery was DEAD! like no nothing DEAD!

Pook hike’s back over a mile to get a BITD official to jump start us. And we’re off, still rockin the right front digger, and it’s creating a sand blast that you can’t imagine on poor Chris’s side of the car, he can’t see anything. but we have 3 miles to teh pit, so we limp on at 20-25mph. arriving in the pit to the throttle being stuck again, this time we knew it was just the small rocks the tire was flinging up sticking in the return spring on the throttle body. So the crew chip’s them out, the engine idles down, and they go to work on the flat tire…..

And the engine just dies. car is 100% dead. again. Well since we got the jump, as we were limping along, i was watching the volt’s gauge creap to 17-18 volts, and the motor would start to stumble and die, and as the rpm’s droped, the volt’s would too, and the engine would refire. and start slowly creaping up again, doing this once a minuite or so? After a few min in the pit, we realized that there was no internal connection in the battery, and NO ONE had an oddessey, we could have gotten 50 optima’s, but not a single oddessey to be found, not even the side x side teams had oddesseys!

So in fear of the car stalling out again, frying the electrical system, or any other possibly expensice damage, and already being over a lap down, we decided it was time to just take it as a lesson learned, enjoy the fact we got start points, and sit down and watch the afternoon race.

Pook was kind enough to smuggle a case of Molson Canadian down in his luggage for us, so between the 5 of us, we sipped through the box of ice cold beer, stanging in 30 degree weather watching really cool go fast car’s race past us, and checking out the scenery

I have to give a Huge thanks to Mike & Shaffer’s Offroad, for the shop space, the design ideas the Cad work, and the CNC cutting of all the part’s.

Phil Remington (yotaphil) aka Tripple F for the tube work, welding, and general bad ass fab!
Tim Priess (Prius ) for being up here ever single night doing all the shit work and helping out with everything!
Steve Springborn for the diff setup’s and the last min help to push the car out the door!

and Levi Stott’s for stepping in the last day being the sane one who had slept in the last 24 hours to keep us from killing eachother, and for towing everything to Vegas for us while we all slept in the truck!

Shooting for 4 Baja 1000’s in a row!

We’ve won three Baja 1000’s in a row and we were going for our fourth. We spent countless hours on logistics and preparing the car for this race. We thought everything was 100% ready as we headed South for Ensenada, Mexico the Saturday before the race (Boy were we wrong). Our schedule was, for myself and Steve, to pre-run our section on Sunday and Monday in the Shaffer’s offroad JK. Monday night we all met up for the Pirate party at Mike’s Sky Ranch. Then Lance used the JK to pre-run what he hadn’t ran in his dodge.
Wednesday we had to get our annual cage inspection. Once that was out of the way we deiced to try and play with the ignition timing a little bit. The car had a really bad flat spot off idle and we were hoping to get rid of it. So we advanced the timing and ran the car up the wash to see if it ran better. We immediately noticed that the transfer case was making a strange noise. We brought the car back to our hotel and after diagnosing it we decided that we needed to install a new transfer case. The spare transfer case we had was by no means in good shape. Jeff Knoll made a few phone calls and found that Dustin Webster had the exact t-case we needed and it would be brought to us in the morning. In the mean time, we pulled the transfer case out the vehicle and tore down the spare case and built 1 good unit out of the 2. We finished about 3am Thursday morning. Dallas showed up with the spare from Dustin. We ran the car through tech and contingency, and passed with flying colors. After tech was over we wanted to run the car to make sure the transfer case was good to go, and that we weren’t getting any pinging from advancing the timing. Everything seemed to be great!

Race day rolls around and we get the car lined up for our approximate 12p start time, we were to start second out of a class of three. Typically the first 30 miles is very very dusty, so our plan was simple; run at a safe pace and take NO risks. The last thing we need to do is crash the car in the first 20-30 miles. At 12:06p we leave the starting line and I immediately notice the car seemed to be running really good. At RM3 we make a right hand turn onto a long high speed concrete road. The jeep quickly climbs to about 70mph, soon at is hit 70 it slowly started loosing power and we were slowing down. The jeep shut off and we coasted to the side of the race course. We called chase 1 on the radio and told them that we had stopped for an unknown reason. We pulled a couple of spark plugs and noticed that the ends were completely melted off. Obviously from way too much ignition timing. Chase 1 showed up, we changed to spark plugs and backed the timing to where we thought it was initially. And we were off and running; the jeep seemed to be running great. Now is where the real problem started. Before the race starts the locals go out onto the course to find their favorite spot to sit and watch the racers. The only way for them to get back into town was for them to go backwards on the race course. It was like gridlock traffic coming head-on on a one lane dirt road. Once we got to about RM30 most of the head-on traffic was gone. At RM41 our next problem popped up. We broke a front drive shaft which was right in front of roughly 50 local spectators. Soon as the car came to a stop a bunch of the locals jumped under the car and started pulling the drive shaft out of the car. We didn’t have a spare in the car, so we called chase 1 and they sent Jeff Mello and his guys to us with a drive shaft. By the time they got there the locals had the drive shaft out and we were ready for the new one. Jeff and his guys quickly installed the new drive shaft and we were off and running. By this point we had over an hour of total down time. My plan had quickly changed as far as how I was going to drive my leg of the race. My new plan was to just get the car to Camo and not have any more issues. But my bad luck continued, somewhere around RM120 we had hit a pretty good little g-out and heard a bang in the front end. My first thought was “oh no, we have a broken front ring and pinion.” but after driving for a little while everything seemed to be fine. Until we got into the silt beds at about RM155 and I noticed that the front end was not pulling at all. I shifted the t-case into 2wd and it seemed to drive exactly the same. We put it back into 4wd and turned on our front ARB air locker and when I was on the throttle the car wanted to turn left and when I was off the throttle it wanted to turn right, this lead me to believe that we had a broken front driver axle. We knew we had John Cox and his guys waiting for us at RM170 so we planned on stopping there to have them check it out. We didn’t know until we pulled into his pit that we had already passed 1701, they were having break issues, and we were only about 1 mile behind 1749. John and his guys found that the driver side front stub shaft was broken and due to this the front unit bearing was coming apart. We didn’t have a spare at that pit. If the unit bearing fails completely the wheel will come off. We limped the car to RM206 to do the driver change and where we had spare parts waiting.

At the pit our crew quickly changed for front axle and unit bearing in the time it took us to do the driver change. Camo and Erik took off to run their leg of the race. I was going to grab something to drink and get some sleep before I headed to the next pit that I needed to be at. Then Camo called over the radio and said he was having running issues. After we got to him at RM220 we found that once again the car had the melted spark plugs. After getting them up and going the car only went about 5 miles before having more spark plug issues. We were down to our last few plugs but it looked like we had just enough to get them going. We also decided to re-time the crank sensor and the distributor. They were both a lot further off than we thought they were. When Camo fired the car back up it seemed to be running on only 5 cylinders. At this point we didn’t know how long the motor would last, we didn’t know what kind of internal damage had been done. After Camo drove the car around for awhile he said it was definitely only running on 5 cylinders, but seemed to be running fine. So he was going to try to continue. At about 7a we headed to San Felipe. We were looking for a parts store for more spark plugs, then headed to RM395 for the next driver change.

The car had just gone 175 miles on only 5 cylinders. While they were doing the driver change we put in a new set of plugs. All the plugs that came out looked fine, which was a good sign. When Lance fired up the jeep, to our amazement it was running on all 6 cylinders! At this point we were over 100 miles behind 1701 who was in the lead. 1749 had dropped out of the race due to electrical issues. It seemed like everything was going great while Lance was in the car until about RM450. At that time the jeep broke a front drive shaft which also broke the t-case in half. Lance called me on the sat phone and he was certain that our race was over. He explained that the t-case was literally in 2 pieces. I told him to pull the front drive shaft out and run it in 2wd to RM500 and that we meet him there with a transfer case. A little over an hour later he showed up at the pit and the crew went to work changing the transfer case. Normally it takes 2 ½ – 3 hours to change the case in this car. We changed it in 45 minutes and did some other work while it was there. At this point, no one had slept for over 30 hours. Now we were in a race against time. We only had 1 hour before the next check point closed and every check point after the times got shorter between them. Lance ran the car full-tilt for the next 172 miles to the finish, but we had missed our time limit.

While we didn’t take home the winners trophy, to get to that finish line felt just like winning! It was awesome to work with a group of people who were willing to do whatever it took just to finish. I think any time you have a chance to go and race in Mexico with a great group of friends you’ve won before the green flag drops!

I’ve got to say a congratulations to the FatCity team!

And thanks to all of are team for making it a great race!!
